Kis Desh Mein Hai Mera Dil (Hindi: किस देश में है मेरा दिल) (English: In Which Country Does My Heart Live) was a very popular Indian soap opera that aired on STAR Plus. The series is produced by popular Indian soap opera producer, Ekta Kapoor of Balaji Telefilms. The story is of two lovers, Prem and Heer and their undying love for one another. Their story consist of many conspiracies, tragedies, heart-break, etc. but in the end their undying love for one another prevails through the roughest of times.

It is a story of immortal love that transcends all boundaries like Heer Ranjha. It is set against a traditional punjabi backdrop. Heer's father-Balraj Maan and Prem's father-Lalit Juneja are best friends. Lalit Juneja decides to move to Canada for the betterment of his family and to earn his family a good livelihood. At this point of time, Balraaj as a true friend gives all his hard earned money to Lalit so that he can go to Canada. Balraaj promises his friend that when he comes back and when Heer and Prem become of age, he will get Heer married to Prem. But soon after Balraaj and his wife die in a bus accident leaving behind Heer. When Lalit comes back from Pardes (Canada) he gets the news of his friends death and assumes that the whole Maan family is dead. So he decides give his son-Prem in hands to Heer's cousin Ashlesha not knowing that Heer is still alive. In spite of all these twists and turns, Heer and Prem manage to find their true love in each other and they get married. Once married, Prem's mother tries to destroy their relationship due to the persistence and tricks of her selfish daughter. Prem accuses Heer of cheating on him (triggered by his mother) and in a drunken state spends the night with another woman. Prem and Heer get separated due to that mistake afterwards, and then the story is takes place 6 years later in Canada. This is a story of promises and an immortal love.

Heer is a small town girl. She is very obedient and has a mixture of tradition and keeps the morals taught by her parents above all. She is caring and sensitive by nature and agrees to marry Prem because it was her father's wish and happiness. She easily accepts Prem's family as her own and handles all responsibilities as a daughter-in-law of the Juneja family. She loves Prem unconditionally and irrevocably and trusts him blindly.
Prem is an obedient, loving and traditional son. Brought up in Canada, he is the jewel of his parents as he kept his culture, heritage and values intact and strong. He sacrifices everything for his siblings, worships his mother and father and soon begins to fall passionately and unconditionally in love with Heer. In a test of love, he is forced to choose between the parents whom he considers his gods and the love he considers his life. Throughout the show, Prem portrays the perfect image of a character that is not fully god, yet not human either.
Gayatri is Prem and Kulraj's stepmother. However, she considers them both as her own children and loves him both dearly. She believes that Prem will never hurt her and will always support her decisions. Gayatri however, has a great change of heart after the tragic death of her daughter Veera.
Lalit Juneja is the father of Prem, Kulraj, Harman,Veera and Preet. He believes in keeping his family together. He treats his daughter-in-laws Heer and Meher as his own daughters.
Harman is the second son of the Juneja family. He believes in taking his own decisions, even if it means going against the family. He is married to the modern, stylish but money-minded Maya.
Maya is Harman's wife. She is modern and finds it difficult to adjust in the conservative Juneja family. Her only support is her sister-in-law Veera, since both of them dislike Heer and Meher.
She is the eldest child of the Juneja family. She is married to Kiran and has three children. She is a simple girl who loves her siblings, children and parents a lot. Kulraj is always lively and light hearted.
Meher is Heer's younger sister. She is a like Heer by nature- obedient, sweet and simple. Food is her weakness and she finds it difficult to control herself. Meher is married to Preet (Prem and Harman's younger brother).
Chahat is Prem and Heer's daughter. She is fun, gullible and loved by all. She respects her parents and tries to keep them close together. Chahat is 7 years old.
Preet is Prem's little brother. He is married to Heer's younger sister Meher. Preet is caring and funny. He can do anything for his elder brother prem and considers him his world
Veera is the youngest child in the Juneja family and is selfish and incredibly money minded. She attempts to destroy her brother, Prem's relationship and her own relationship with her husband, but ultimately falls in love with her husband. She dies in a fire in an attempt to bring her husband, Nihaal, closer to her.
Nihaal is the brother of Heer and Meher who was separated from them in his childhood but then reunited with them as an adult. He is a loving brother and a loving husband, yet he does never receives the same love from his wife. In the begininng of their marriage, Veera detests him and when she begins to love him at last, she is killed in a fire. Nihaal, who is believed to be at fault, is then hated and accused by Veera's family and sent to jail.

Notes:
story The story begins with a young village girl (Heer Maan), who has been engaged to her father’s best friend’s son since before she hit puberty. She is a simple girl, and wants to make her parents happy above all. She doesn’t think twice about questioning her engagement to a man she has never seen. On the other side, we have Prem Juneja, a man who has grown up in Canada, yet has no problem agreeing to a marriage his father decided on years ago, because his parents are the most important thing to him. Next to them, his happiness means nothing. Prem returns to India with his family, only to find out that Heer and her entire family have supposedly perished in an accident. Now, here, instead of releasing Prem from his promise, his father forces him to agree to marry his best friend’s niece, thinking to appease his best friend’s soul in this way. The thing they don’t know is that Heer and her sister, Mehar, are actually alive and well. Their deaths are a lie perpetuated by an evil aunt, who wants to marry her daughter off to the rich Prem Juneja. Prem meets Heer. Falls in love with her. And, eventually, runs off with her. He loves his father, but he cannot watch Heer marry a mentally challenged man. Prem regrets hurting his father, but he has made a promise to Heer. During a storm, Lalit Juneja, Prem’s father, realizes the truth and is ready to give his blessing to the couple. Heer does not know this, and pretends to have amnesia so that Prem can be free to go back to his family. Heer sneaks out one night, and Prem goes after her. At the train station, Lalit helps Prem convince Heer to stay. Heer and Prem reunite and Lalit gives them his blessing.
Before Heer and Prem can marry, Prem supposedly dies in a bomb blast. Despite all ghostly visitations and dead bodies that look just like Prem, Prem turns out to be alive, but suffering from Amnesia. He recovers from his amnesia in time to save Heer from marriage to a man bent on destroying the Juneja family. The audience then finds out that the man Heer married is not Prem Juneja, but is actually someone masquerading as him for money. As the story moves along, we are now told that no … it actually is Prem Juneja, but he is dying of a disease. And then, that turns out to be a lie. Prem is actually whole and healthy. Prem and Heer reunite.
The story continues. Just as Prem and Heer consummate their relationship, Prem’s evil sister Veera comes home with tales about her husband’s abuse. Because Veera’s husband is Heer’s long-lost brother, Nihal, Heer is kicked out of the house in retaliation. Preet and Heer’s sister work diligently to reunite the two. Eventually, Prem realizes that while he must respect his mother, his wife is his responsibility, too. He brings Heer back home. They reunite. This action causes Prem’s (step)mother to hate Heer, to be jealous of her, and to decide on destroying her son’s relationship with Heer.
Stepmother succeeds. She manipulates Prem into thinking that Heer is having an affair, who then goes to confront Heer. Prem then gets drunk and falls in bed with another woman. The audience knows that nothing happened, but the characters don’t. Heer leaves.
Six years later, the two meet again. Prem finds out that Heer had a daughter that she named Chahat. At this point, we see an angry and bitter Heer. She has been hardened by Prem’s betrayal, and wants nothing to do with him. This was a nice change in character from the crying martyr she was before. Prem pursues Heer (knowing that he cannot live without her any longer), and Heer eventually forgives him. They reunite.
Stepmother is still trying to separate the two, and Heer doesn’t tell Prem about this. Of course, she has reverted to the “good” daughter-in-law she was before. Prem is still easily manipulated and explodes at Heer multiple times. The woman that Prem supposedly slept with comes back into their lives. That is when the truth comes out regarding Prem’s infidelity. After all of this, Prem and Heer’s main supporter, Preet, is killed. There then follows a plot regarding evil new husband, kidnapping, and the truth coming out. The story ends with the Juneja family mourning those they have lost, and being hopeful about the future.
